Adopting a Horse  from TEARS

Rescue horses at TEARS spend an average of 3-5 years with us before they can be adopted. This number does not include our sanctuary horses who average over 10 years at the rescue!

TEARS has no paid emoloyees. Every cent donated goes to the horses with the exception of those times we have to hire day labor to assist with particular project requiring additional help with heavy work.

Feed, Hay, Veterinary care, husbandry items like wormers, fly spray, medications, vaccinations, farrier care, halters and leads all take a tremendous amount of funding to properly care for the horses. Our annual budget in 2008 was $17,000.00. Hay prices have skyrocketed and our annual budget is now pushing $40,000.00 per year.

Feeding each horse, after they have reached optimum weight and are on maintenence, averages $150.00/horse/month. TEARS purchases our hay from a wholesaler and we buy a 1/2 semi-truck at a time. Each truckload is running about $3,800.00 t0 $4,200.00/load. A load of hay usually lasts about 2.5 months.

Veterinary care for each horse averages about $350.00/year

Farrier care every 8 weeks for most, every 6 for some, and a couple at every 4 weeks runs $40.00/horse except Diosa who has to have back shoes for her neurological issues. Diosa costs $120.00 every 8 weeks.

The real expense come when we rescue horses. To refeed an emacited horse for the first 4-6 weeks runs about $200.00/week!

Manure removal costs TEARS $225.00/month. We have composted manure and offered it to anyone who wants it, but we cannot give enough away to keep up with the horses potty habbits.

Adoption fee for any horse regardless of whether they come with papers, age, or training is $2,000.00

TEARS does not negotiate the fee for adopting a horse. We never recover the cost of rescue for any horse we take in and no profit is made on any horse adopted out. All fees are used to pay our numerous creditors for hay, veterinary care, facilities maintenance and improvement, and manure removal.
